Seems his fall from grace (his only "grace" being a 10-1 final season as Wazzu's QB, and loss by only 5 to the national champions) started EARLY ON. Personal ancedote:
In summer, 1998, an insurance agent called seeking my "business", and in his effort to entice this prospective customer, he cited his own devotion to, and knowledge of, football. Of course he pandered to yours truly's alma mater, and before long, our Rose Bowl victim came up. "Mike, I'll tell you," he began. "I think the Chargers are really going to be disappointed at using the No.2 pick on RL." Why, I asked. (Not wanting to diminish the accomplishment of our '97 defense-extraordinnare in shutting him down). "Well, he reported to camp at 265. That's more than 30 more than he weighed last season at WSU."
Weight control isn't felony breaking-and-entering, to be sure, but it did come across to me there and then that the guy had "baggage". And we all know what a complete bust he was in the NFL. And of his growing OFF-the-field issues as time went on.
