In all fairness, these kids do the same thing by making verbal commitments and then flipping at the last minute. The SEC has been doing this for years, and so has O$U. If the kid isn't going to get playing time, set him free.

One-sided. There is no mention of reports that Swenson peaked when he was 16 and ignored UM staff advice to attend summer camps, and was told months ago that maybe he should explore other options. Shawn Windsor wrote similar crap today in the freep. So much bullshit.

That sums it up nicely.

Yes I would call that scathing. Deserved I do not know. I do know that this sort of rhetoric is increasing, whether it be from spending the night at a recruits house or worse yet climbing a tree. I fail to see this as behavior looked up to by the very men that you endeavour to lend an example. and as the old adage goes, where there is smoke there is likely fire. Would Bo have spent the night at a prospective kickers house?

I guess it could be considered unfair to the recruit. Then again, a scholarship costs an awful lot of money. They have a right to be choosey.

Bo may not have done that because that was not his personality and very few coaches could get away with it and have it seem natural/not phony, the way JH can. Bo would have adapted to the times though. We know this because he adapted over the course of his own career.

Please see the Rivals article (non-pay) a friend sent me, posted on the Swenson decommit thread. Bo DID pull offers, per Doug Skene. Swenson sounds soft to me.

Bo had unlimited scholarships at his disposal. He also really only recruited against OSU for the guys he wanted. It was the Big 2 and Little 8 in those days. Heck, I've heard that Bo and Woody would work out amongst each other who they wanted and then tell the rest of the big 10 coaches who was available for them to recruit.

This is Jim having fun. He loves getting to know people. He loves this side of coaching. No harm, and if you think it's wrong, you are an elitist and probably look down your nose at a lot of things.

Also, one last thing, did Bo have to deal with cell phone cameras and social media, and 24 hour sports news cycles, and recruiting Web sites, and all of that? Nope.

It definitely doesn't put Coach Harbaugh in a good light.  However there were multiple errors in the article.  Swenson was quoted as being "shaken back by it".  I've never heard that phrase used before as I am more accustomed to the more traditional "taken aback by it".

Also, Kain Colter.  Colter graduated from Northwestern after a phenomenal college career.  Why did Greenstein say "No wonder Colter thinks college football players should be considered employees. He got fired before setting foot on Northwestern's campus."?  Shouldn't it have been fired before setting foot on Stanford's campus?

Spellcheck only looks for misspelled words, not that they are the right words.  Apparenly Mr. Greenstein forgot that fact (as did his editor).  Mr. Greenstein attended Northwestern, fantastic school.  It is even better than Michigan aademically speaking IMHO.  However, popular culture doesn't see it thst way.  That may provide a little motivation for Greenstein to write the article the way he did.

Am I thrilled with what has alledgedly transpired (I say that as we have only heard one side of the story, and likely never will learn the truth)?  No, but you've gotta remember only one person on the current coaching staff (Mattison) was on the coaching staff when Swenson "committed" to Michigan.  That person also coaches defense while Swenson plays offense, I highly doubt that there was ever any interaction between th two.

I do like the suggestion of allowing kids to sign early though (the summer before their senior year).  Although that would make things much harder for most coaching staffs as after they are burned one or twice by the Derrick Green's of the world (people who do not improve or even regress) they would become much more hesitnt to offer early.  That would actually push recruiting back into a much more condensed time frame that will undoubtedly impac the season.  That would definitely take time for both the coaches and recruits to adjust to.  It "could" even out the landscape of the have/have nots though as smaller schools would continue to offer early and maybe scoop up a 3 or 4 star?

That guy didn't have all of the facts, he simply wrote what he wanted to.

Here is a more accurate article on the incident:
