It's been a busy summer, and I hope everyone has had a good one.
So I just saw that both Baumgardner and Quinn have departed mlive.
I must have a bragging moment and say I knew from the beginning the paths that each were on.
Baumgardner, was imo, the best beat reporter that mlive had -always prepared, thoughtful, and he researched the heck out of his assignment -which was U of M football and everything related. He tried to ask smart and insightful questions that many of us were already thinking as a fan base. Some questioned the Sparty alum's allegiance, (including me,) but his body of work has been as objective and fair as we've seen; and that's what we want as an audience. We don't want the homer telling us how great everything is, just like we don't want the negative nancy telling us how horrible everything is (ironically UM alum Drew Sharp RIP.) Baumgardner was quick to point out lazy reporting (i.e.: he ripped apart Colin Cowherd for his interview gaffe with Harbaugh a couple years back.) So, I am not surprised to see Baumgardner essentially get promoted to the Detroit Free Press. Congrats to him. It is well deserved. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2017/08/16/michigan-football-detroit-free-press/566095001/
Quinn, on the other hand, seemed lost at times. He often looked for Baumgardner for direction in their weekly videos. He was unsure of himself at times, and not quite in tune with UM sports. He was ok, competent enough I guess, but I felt the average UM fan knew much more about UM sports than he did. I guess that's what happens when you hire an outsider (he is from the east coast.) So I'm not sure if mlive decided to go in another direction, but Quinn is now working for The Athletic: https://theathletic.com/77997/2017/07/24/quinn-the-thrill-of-finding-the-right-home-for-college-basketball/
I have never heard of The Athletic. Perhaps it is a pretty good source, or maybe it will be someday. Best of luck to Quinn, hope he finds his passion in sports, because it doesn't seem like it's UM hoops.
