huge in the scheme of things.

#1 seed have a significantly better percentage of getting to the Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final 4.

Of course you say but stats are stats.

Getting a #1 seed gives you a 42% chance of making the Final 4. This is compared to 25% for a #2 seed.

One of the reasons it's big this year is that the #3 seeds that are around figure to be significantly better than the 4/5 seed that a #1 would mast likely play.

I do realize it's still up to the team but statistics do not lie. (usually.)

Perhaps a different thread for your new topic?

Thanks

Also not interested in seeing Iowa State again! Although it would be nice to avenge our loss.

OS state is not that good. Their offense is stand around and let Marcus Smart do something.

Yeah but when he does do something…and with our D being very suspect at times, I would not want to even risk it

You have to beat good teams at least beginning in the second game. I respect them all but don't fear any of them.

Yesterday Sam Webb said 11 out of the last 14 National Champions were #1 seeds. That seems odd to me and I did not investigate since I've been mostly car-bound.

But it's yet another reason to get the #1 seed.

Number one seeds theoretically have the easiest paths and are awarded to the best teams, so there should be a fairly strong correlation. But if a 2 seed is better than a 1 seed (or even a 4 seed if you are among the legion of people picking Louisville and/or MSU this year), then that better team is likely to do better. 1 seeds do better in tennis tournaments too. But if the best tennis player is say seeded 5th because he or she was injured much of the prior year, but is now fully recovered, than he/she is the pick to make.

The 1 seeds prove out with more success over time because the committee generally gets it right, but in any given year if they have misevaluated a team, then the seed isn't going to control.

That's all great shoes.

Bottom line.

#1 seeds win 4 out of every 5 National Championships.

But not BECAUSE they were a #1 seed, because they were one of the 4 best teams in the country (last year Louisville was the overall #1), and they were awarded a one seed as a result. The important point is that they were one of the very best teams. There has only been one year since the field went to 64 teams or more where all four 1 seeds made the final 4 and it's rare that 3 of 4 do. The legit ones do make it, and as you say typically win the tournament. But there wasn't a whole lot separating Louisville's overall #1 seed last year and Michigan team which was 1 if 4 #4 seeds.

Louisville didn't beat us because they were a 1 seed. They beat us because they were just a little bit better.

Not 1 person outside of Michigan fans or Alums even picks Michigan to go to the Final 4.

Hardly ANY even pick us to go to the Elite 8. (I'm giving the media the benefit of the doubt because I haven't seen EVERY person's pick.)

If the kids can't use this as the ultimate motivation I don't know what they could use.

Stanford Steve on the SVP and Russilo show has UM vs MSU in the final.

I got UM losing to Louisville in the elite 8.

Here is a good breakdown of what people are picking. FWIW, Michigan will be the underdog if they play 4 seed Louisville. Michigan vs Duke is a toss-up. I think Duke has the better team, but Michigan's got more tournament experience (how crazy is that?) and the Indianapolis crowd should be very pro-Michigan.

Why do you say Duke has a better team? Michigan had a better record in a tougher conference.

wshoes, I think they are slightly better and I give the edge because they have Jabari Parker. GRIII did a great job on Parker back in December, but kid is a walking double-double.

That's one game, it was at Cameron where they rarely lose (almost never non-conference) and Nick was still sub par from his ankle sprain the game before.

yep, had Nik been well enough to help out Caris and Mitch or if GRIII steps it up just a tad then that game would have been a bit different.

Oh yeah and Quinn Cook had a monster game against us. He averaged 11.3 pts per game this year and he dropped 24 on us that night. That game could and should have been much closer than it was. I think we have a legitimate shot at beating them on a neutral court.
