| Was the beginning of the end . When we hired Rich Rod or was the bigger mistake hiring Hoke, Think that is one thing we really got to sit down and think about. Should RR stayed around until we had the sure fired solution, or would have things just been worse or did Loyd leave the foundation so unstable that it was rebuilding time already:no: . _________________ "HAIL HAIL MICHIGAN" Wanted John Harbaugh but I'll settle for JIM WITH AN ENTHUSIASM UNKNOWN TO MANKIND GOOO BLUE The Curse of Rich Rod

| Great question. Of the two choices given I'd have to say Hoke. We can argue forever about RR (and it feels like we have) but he was a top candidate when hired based upon proven success, Brady Hoke was almost a proven mediocre candidate with nearly a 100 game sample and a sub .500 record.
I think the downfall actually dates back to late in the Lloyd Carr era, when discipline faltered, unreasonable allegiances to non-performing assistants started and misjudgments of recruits (Boubacar Cissoko, the 5 star running back from Portage whose name I keep forgetting, with the drug issues in HS etc.)

| I agree that internally the downfall started during Carr's last two years. Recruiting (or the lack there of) only brought it to light three years later.
The public downfall started when we fired RichRod. yes he was a top tier coach, yes he was turning it around (3-9, 5-7, 7-6) but firing him after three seasons and the fans booing him out of town really showed how bad Michigan had gotten. He was just never going to work at UM and that's a bummer because he's done well at AZ and he's being considered a top candidate at Florida just behind Mullen.
Hiring hoke after the RR firing only exacerbated the issue. _________________ Sometimes people standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't - Jim Harbaugh

I have serious doubts that even if RR was given the budget that Brady has that could have put together a D. However, there is no question that if RR had the support Brady was given things would be different. _________________ Sometimes people standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't - Jim Harbaugh

| the downfall began with Carr first blackballing Miles to Martin and then sabotaging RR .... RR was a top 5 coach when he came here, fact .... he did himself no favors with his D .... then we compounded matters again by bypassing Miles or any other top flight candidate for Brandon's yes man Hoke ... | |

| Downfall began when Crable was called for a late hit _________________ “And I remember across those years Two banners that crowned the crest, When Yale was king of the conquered East, And Michigan ruled the West.”

| To me, it wasn't RR or BH. It was the hiring of DB. He was the culprit at both ends of the problems (beginning of the end). I'll admit that I was one that didn't have a problem with RR being let go. One reason was because his arrogance is what got UM put on probation. He got away with it at WVa and apparently thought it wasn't an issue. And, I was under the allusion that Les or John would be the next coach. I will also admit that I didn't jump on the BH train right away. I was happy happy happy after his first year, and even with the downward spiral, record wise, I still thought he might be able to turn it around until half way through last year. That was when I really noticed the lack of coaching. I feel we can throw stones at the two coaches, but DB deserves all of the stones, rocks, bricks, plies of manure we can throw!! Which is why I keep saying DB and BH have to go....this year! Go Blue!! _________________ Who's got it better than us? Nooooooooobody!!!

pretty much. does anyone remember the exact number (in minutes) that the NCAA concluded that the team was working over the allotted time? Something tells me it was like 20 minutes or something like that which is why everyone (even UM haters) equated it to stretching. I think RRs "arrogance" is what pissed off Tony Clemons too which is what led him to mention it when he got to Colorado. I'm not sure if I believe Clemons all that much though. He seemed bitter when he left. _________________ Sometimes people standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't - Jim Harbaugh
