Jourdan Lewis rated as seventh-best player in college football, Jabrill Peppers an honorable mention

ANN ARBOR -- People are noticing Jourdan Lewis these days.

Big time.

Lewis, Michigan's 5-foot-10 junior corner from Detroit Cass Tech, won the Big Ten's defensive player of the week award last week after a four-tackle, 1-interception (returned for a touchdown) performance in a 38-0 win over Northwestern.

Pro Football Focus -- a service that ranks and grades all college teams and players throughout each season -- has had Lewis as its top-ranked cornerback nationally over the past few weeks. And now, PFF has Lewis as one of the 10 best players in the country regardless of position.

At No. 7 overall. From PFF:

The Wolverines have had several defenders stand out this season, including defensive tackles Maurice Hurst and Chris Wormley and safety Jabrill Peppers, all of whom are top-10 players at their position. But Lewis might be the best on the whole team. He has PFF's top coverage grade, a nation-leading 8 passes defensed, and opponents are an awful 11 for 34 for just 67 yards when targeted – that's good for a passer rating against of just 26.8. He's also added two interceptions. He should be tested this week by Michigan State's Aaron Burbridge, who is one of our top-ranked wide receivers.
As for Peppers, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound nickel corner/safety is included (with Burbridge) on a list of players who just missed the top 10 overall. Peppers currently leads all Big Ten defensive backs in tackles for loss with 4 1/2. He's also logged five pass breakups on the season.

Outside observers are starting to notice Lewis' play, something those inside Schembechler Hall have seen for some time now.

"He's such an ascending player, in all parts of his game," Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said of Lewis this week. "He's got exceptional quickness, foot speed, ball skills and a physical nature with the way he plays. His tackling is ascending, his nose for the football ... he's really a football player.

"A great demeanor as a football player. He's quiet but confident, in all aspects."

Lewis and No. 12 Michigan will host No. 7 Michigan State on Saturday.
