UM over-pays their top personnnel who donate a large amount back to The University. Even DB Brandon did this, not 1/2 of his salary but a lot. I'm not an accountant so I do not know the particulars but it looks like a win-win for both party's. The employee gets a large tax write-off (and therefore a substantial refund from the government) and the University receives a substantial sum of money. This appears to be a very intelligent way to accure funds by a university. I am however waiting for the day when som employee doesn't "donate" back to the university. There must be something in the contract. However, with most alumni I don't see that as a problem. That might be another reason why alumni go back to their universities. Not only is is always good to go back to your alma mater but financially it makes sense.
BTW, AD Hackett will be staying on for a significant period of time after the new AD is located. All of this in an effort to make the transition as seemlessly as possible. AD Hackett is a great man. I'd even say a Michigan-Man but he doesn't like that phrase.
