Here's a link from a Cleveland Browns site. It explains the new zone blocking scheme that Kyle Shanahan will be implementing in Cleveland. The same his father used in Denver, where they made all pros out of 6th round draft choices.
Basically, there are two types - inside and outside runs, with about 12 possibilites in all. The basic simplicity of the playbook, allows the players to concentrate on what to do against all the different defensive alignments possible. If they execute, then the play should work.
This is in contrast to Al Borges, who used so many different formations, that the players heads were spinning and the opposing defenses knew what was coming. 41 different formations out of 87 total plays in the Nebraska debacle.
It doesn't all fall on underclassmen lack of experience.
