Nick addressed this at length in his column, given that of course most of us had our jaws drop when we read/saw that. NB's comment on possibilities: (1) Sending a "signal" to WH (translation: get your ass in gear) (2) rewarding Ryan Glasgow for a strong spring.
Both are possibilities. But maybe there's a third: did Matty & Co. group him with the "least" of their D-linemen, to see how he'd handle double/triple-teams, and the lack of help from a Frank Clark, Mario Ojemudia, Taco Charlton or Chris Wormley at his side (or a Jake Ryan behind him)??? In other words, they, too, know he sure as shit isn't the THIRD-best NG/DT we have (certainly not based on last season), so wanted to really toss him into the frying pan to see how he reacts, to the greatest possible challenge?
Just more of my babblin'...
