| Perfect world, best case scenario DG stays healthy the ENTIRE year.
So what if UM is up 4 TDs on a team, do you throw in Shane? Do we put in Bellomy?
Basically the question is..... Do we try everything in our power to Redshirt Shane Morris this year?

| People redshirt sophomores? I would think that can only happen if it is a medical redshirt... _________________ | |

| yes, a player can red shirt once at any time in their career. it just rarely happens past their freshman year if they played.
I'm just thinking how different UM would look this year if DG didn't get his red shirt and I look to the future and realize that I'm not going to want shane to have to leave a year early and not have a viable qb backup available (provided WS or MD don't pan out)
really a lot of "what ifs" but I still wonder.
I think shane should play mop-up garbage time to allow him to get that much more ready for next year. _________________ Sometimes people standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't - Jim Harbaugh

| No, I don't think you RS Morris. You get him as many snaps as possible. The guy you RS is Speight. In the best case scenario, Morris would then start for 2 years, and Speight would then have 2 years to start. At this point, the depth is being built. Then you can RS Malzone and then DeWeaver and so on. | |

| I sure as hell don't want to see DG go down, but when (IF) we can build up a comfortable lead, especially early in the year, SM needs to get some game time to be ready. We sure as hell don't want another Nebraska situation!! Even though I am not all that sure about Bellomy, that does give us a three deep set of QBs for this year, which is about the level of depth most colleges maintain. In my mind unless something spirals in the wrong way, or the QB really IS the best of the best, we RS the freshman QB each year to try to keep that 3 QB set. For me, this is a critical year for us and I think we need to keep all of our guns available at the spots that need to be protected. RS Speight, get Shane as ready as we can, just in case, and get UM back on track. BTW, is there a cutoff point during the year where you have to declare the RS? Before the 1st game? The 5th game? | There is no cut off.
If you play 1 play your red shirt is gone.
You can dress for every game but if you don't play in any play you can then call it a red shirt year. _________________ "What the HELL's going on out here?"

| Fish answered it. Next question.
All sarcasm aside, I don't see how or why you RS Morris especiLly if he is our clear #2. All you do is stunt his growth which helps no one in the future. I have plenty of faith in the QB's coming in to not worry about our QB 3,4,5 years down the road.
I know this hasn't been said yet but the best guys play...PERIOD! Hoke doesn't have 3-4 years to make this work. It needs to work now or it will get ugly for him.

| Agree with fish, gobluejoe and mgoblue- you get him snaps when you can. We don't need a rerun of 2012 Nebraska. Win now- Brady doesn't have the luxury of a long view.

| I agree with Fish . It would more beneficial to Redshirt Sprieght5,1st you don't know what the season gonna bring early and Morris may need the experience especially if DG goes down. So early with a big lead you need to get Morris some snaps. _________________ "HAIL HAIL MICHIGAN" Wanted John Harbaugh but I'll settle for JIM WITH AN ENTHUSIASM UNKNOWN TO MANKIND GOOO BLUE The Curse of Rich Rod

Could you name the last Michigan non-freshman to redshirt that wasn't related to an injury? _________________

| TJ Daniel from Oregon did last year. THe reason I found this is because I remember at the beginning of last year Oregon was talking about putting a red shirt on Pharoh Brown (a former top TE recruit for Michigan) in his sophomore year, even after playing well his freshman year because they had soooo much depth at Jumbo Ath/TE. I just remember being mad because if that were the case then we sure would have loved to have him at UM because of Funchess moving to WR. Then Jake Butt showed up and all was well in my world. http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205504146 I bet a quick google search would find me a dozen more from last year so maybe it happens a lot more often than we think it does. But like Hail says, I can't recall a UM kid doing this. _________________ Sometimes people standing on third base think they hit a triple, but they didn't - Jim Harbaugh

"2013 — Redshirted his second season to allow him to adjust to the defensive line after being converted from tight end. " Pretty unique situation. If Morris was switching to cornerback, I could understand a redshirt. _________________

this is not factually correct. I am not beating on you, just stating that "anyone" can redshirt after their first year and it has happened in the past although there would still be a question whether Michigan has done it. COULD Michigan Red Shirt Shane. We ABSOLUTELY could, can and are able to. It is well within the rules of the NCAA. This is regardless of medical question. WOULD Michigan Red Shirt Shane Morris this year? Who Ya Crappin'? LMAO I would say about the only reason to do it would be with a guy changing positions. OR, say a guy plays his Freshman year then is injured during practice for his sophomore season. And While i type this I realize AMARA DARBOH!!!! He played his Freshman year and was injured in camp. He Red Shirted last year. So, while it is injury related, it certainly can happen and, sorta, has at Michigan. _________________ "What the HELL's going on out here?"

| Amara Darboh was injured. Your question was whether it had happened when there wasn't an injury involved. I thought I had found one, but alas, was mistaken. _________________ "What the HELL's going on out here?"
