| Adding #21 to the retired list.
I think it's the right call. Thoughts?

| I've said this before but I don't like retiring college numbers period. You only have 99 to work with. Including walk-ons we probably dress that many for home games. You have duplicate numbers now which means you have to take care that they are not on the field at the same time. I like having new guys issued numbers of players I remember from the past (not the lends patch, just the numbers), and wondering if they'll live up to them or not.
What if you are recruiting a high schooler with a real fondness for a certain number whether its because his father wore it, or he's worn it all his life, and that number is retired?

I can see your point and almost agree with it, but sadly I don't. _________________ 'eggo denoted me a First ballot Hall of Famer! - sandyeggo_blue wrote:

Let me get this straight: You trivialize the impact of Nike over Adidas when it comes to fondness for a certain brand, but then use fondness of a certain retired number as a talking point? _________________

As usual, you have it wrong. My points about Adidas and Nike were as follows: Nike is overrated and overpriced because so much of the dollar cost of their products go into high cost endorsements. Never an adidas lover just pointing out that the Nike superiority is based on their superior marketing over a number of years which convinced the youth of America that their stuff was the coolest. I always said that my favorite is ASICS who doesn't even play in the college team marketing area. As for Adidas saddling us with the wrong color of Maize or hideous alternative uniforms we now find out from Bacon's book that Brandon made all those decisions and we did not have to have all of that crap. Still I always said that if it was a recruiting advantage to go back to Nike, then I had no issue with it and would happily go back to buying Nike Michigan gear. The retiring of uniform numbers is a different matter. I have stated my views. If you disagree that's fine, many others do as well, I understand the other point of view. The first college uniform number I ever became really aware of as special was #44 for Syracuse when the late All American Ernie Davis (who tragically died not long after the Cleveland Browns drafted him in the first round). Davis wore #44 at Syracuse because all time great Jim Brown had worn it before him. I thought that was great. Later Floyd Little another All American and later Denver Bronco player wore it. I thought that was very cool. I believe Syracuse did eventually retire 44 but I thought the idea of the sucession of the number to different generations was cool. Those guys all came in and wore the number from the beginning. They didn't become a star under a different number and change to it. There is always the risk that a player won't "live up" to the number, but that uncertainty is part of the fun.
