I am sure the top guys in the state will have his attention but he may not be looking to get every 4 star kid. Perhaps he is not aware the kid is a legacy or maybe he does not care. If you remember we had some DB wearing the #1 jersey when RR first started. I think the kids was on the scout team too. When RR was here he recruited offense first which is how we ended up with a ton of wr's and rb's. Urban runs a similar system and he needs guys to run that system. This may be a matter of McCray playing on the wrong side of the ball right now.
I still think the #1 thing is way over stated.
If your best player is a DB, and I'm not saying Avery was, he was the #1 guy BTW, I think he should be able to wear it.
What if DR wanted to change to #1 next season? What would your reaction be? I don't buy into the "have to earn it" stuff either. The only player to ever have to earn it was BE, and that's because he was talented but lazy. Lloyd pushed the right buttons for him with that.
Carter was handed it. Butterfield was handed it. Alexander was handed it. Terrell was handed it. JMHO.
Also, back to DR. If anyone thinks he hasn't earned the right to wear #1 if he wants, I completely disagree. He has been the public face of this team since he started last year. He has represented the team with dignity and pride. He is the leader of the team and has no problem carrying that weight.

I tried to use the Quote option from another thread and post it in a new thread, but it didn't work like I wanted it to.

I'm accustomed to #1 being a WR...should go to no one else in my opinion.
I feel the #2 should be used the same way for DBs (with Brady has already publicly said will be the case after Smith graduates.)

I whole-heartedlt agree on the #2 but Coach Hoke has said this? Can you provide a link? I don't doubt it, just want to see proof.

2ndComing...FWIW, I remember seeing something about #2 going to the top DB, per Brady, a few weeks ago. Can't remember where, though.

I don't remember where I read it. I may not have....it may very well have been something I heard him mention during a presser (I watched every single one from this season).

I looked tradition on dictionary.com. It turns out tradition involves long established or inherited ways of thinking or acting. It did not make any mention of making changes on a whim.
I am sorry but as far as I am concerned tradition is tradition. When you are the coach at an institution like Michigan that has a lot of traditions it is your job to uphold it.

Thus he doesn't have a job here any more. And that "Victors Walk" is a joke...

Yeah that Victors Walk was for the fish (my personal way of saying 'for the birds'). Leave the B.S. 'traditions' like that for the WVU's of the world.

Not one person ever said they didn't like it when it was introduced. If RR had won a lot more games, the Victors Walk would be considered a great "new" tradition.

Yea I have no issue with the Victors Walk or starting a new tradition. I know other teams do something similar. I never went to the Victors Walk because I prefer to party up until kick off. I think it is ok for people that want the game day atmosphere, especially for fans that bring their kids to games.

Ditto. Can't walk into the stadium until the handle of Jack Daniels is finished.

I did. Oooohhhh, walking from Crisler to The Big House, Wow! What are they gonna do for an encore, parachute in? You can't just throw out traditions just because you want to make an impact. RR = Rogue Redneck.

Wait a second. Braylon is OK with DR wearing #1. If he's good with it, I'm good with it. Of course I mentioned that above and got beat up.

I saw that article. I can appreciate BE's 'accepatancd' of a non-WR getting the jersey, but to me, that isn't what #1 is about.
Actually when I read it, I felt bad for the WRs on our team after reading his 'no big time playmakers at WR' comment.
Remember a year ago? Roundtree really wanted it.
Not saying he deserves it, but I also hope none is the WRs on our team read that article.
Go Blue!

He is right about no playmakers at WR.
Not one of them can take over a game like BE did against MSU in 2004.

Hard to take you seriously using Braylon as your argument. I appreciate what he did at Michigan but he is a head case. As an NFL player, I hold him in the same regard as TO and Moss with about 1/5 of the resume.
Funny thing about traditions. They are long standing and do not change. I think tradition is what makes Michigan special. There are plenty of other numbers out there.

Yes on everything. I love Braylon for everything he did on the field but even when he was here, he was a head case. I got great joy from watching him play but not much joy from watching him talk.
I can't keep track of all the new rules that apply to the #1 jersey now that Braylon has his say on the matter (because of the very generous scholarship donation.) It's not like the old days where it was simply given to a highly recurited receiver right away. With Braylon, Carr used it as a motivational tool and Braylon kept asking over and over and over, "Can I be #1 now?" Until Carr finally said, "yes," before his junior year.
As much as I love Denard, I want the #1 jersey to stay with a receiver. They have given us plenty of great memories over the years.

Denard is a fantastic player who is electrifying to watch because at any second he can... That being said, I wouldn't want anyone but a WR wearing the "1". That's just my opinion and I really have no say in it as I'm not Football Alumni (or even that close to the program) but that's the way I see it.
However, since Braylon is good with it I don't know. Braylon has left a lot to be desired in the NFL and as Willie pointed-out, he is a bit of a head case. My last year while at Michigan was Braylon's Junior year and I actually liked the guy. I met him, very casually and it didn't really have much meaning, twice on campus. Braylon seemed like a great guy and the thing that really impresses me in the scholarship he started. I do have to wonder about a QB, who plays like a RB, but has the size of a CB (in High School) wearing "#1" though....

Wow! I'd forgotten how good Alexander was on punt returns.
Braylon vs Sparty in '04 is the best game I ever attended.
