Timing of "The Game" Empty
PostSubject: Timing of "The Game"   Timing of "The Game" EmptyMon Nov 19, 2012 10:10 am

It's been a few years now that "The Game" has been played on the week of Thanksgiving. Curious to what others thoughts are. Do you like it being on this week?

One thing that is nice is the work week is shorter, which makes it easier to get through. The holiday has also made it nicer to get together with friends for the game since everyone is off.

This is the third year of it being after Thanksgiving, and I don't like it. I wish it was played before. I would think it would be cool for a 2 week layoff between the final B1G games and the B1G championship game.

However, you have a great point about the shorter work week.

An extra week would be good for the B1G championship game. They could move it back a week which would reduce the ridiculously long break between that and the bowl game.

I kind of liked the game before Thanksgiving mostly because it was routine. One of the topics at the Thanksgiving table was talking about the previous weekend's UM/OSU game. And since I grew up in the 80's and 90's, we always seemed to have a victory to discuss.

Once in a while, the calendar year left us no choice but to have the game after Thanksgiving. For instance, the 1995 game where Tim Biakabutuka ran for 300+ yards was post-Thanksgiving. But instances like that were extremely rare.

I'm not sure why college football made this shift several years ago. I think the Big Ten was the last conference to join them. And that was mostly credited to the Buckeyes getting their asses handed to them in the national title game a couple years in a row. The argument was that if they had an extra week, those games wouldn't have been so lopsided. Yeah. Sure.

When I went in '73 (10-10) it was T-day weekend. Driving back to AA from Grand Rapids it rained all the way, then miraculously stopped when we got off the highway and stayed dry the whole game. The dead silence in the House with no winner at the end was really strange.

I don't think I really mind it, one way or the other.

I am glad, like Willie said, that I'll only have to sit at work and wonder about the game for three days this week.
