I know the whole turning down money argument BUT I still say leaving early is not good for most kids.

I think the only benefit of staying is to improve on draft stock. If you're drafted, the time and resources available in the NBA provide a great place to improve on things.

He was a first round pick. That guaranteed contract. Nothing wrong with that.

I get draft stock. Kids should also position themselves to get in the NBA and stay there. It's a shame that the degree doesn't mean anything either. One injury and the future could go to shit. Eh why think of tomorrow though?

True. Hard decision to make at that age. I bet a lot of players finish their degrees at the end of their playing career, though.

You throw that much money in someone face and say we want you, It is probably to much to ask a kid to say no.

Who needs a degree when you can be financially set.

It was prudent and smart for Nick to go on balance. Would he have benefited from another year of college and college ball aside from economic and security considerations? I think he would have.

Ride because nobody's ever blown through a few million dollars before. There've been plenty of athletes to go bro. It's not that uncommon.

The other sign of the coin is that he might have been one of those guys whose ceiling was to be a really good to great college player but would never be that good in the pros. If he is one of those guys then leaving while his stock was at its high point was probably a good move.

Cowherd today: 75-80% of athletes are broke 3 years out of sports. I think this statistic is not that shocking to me and is never talked about. There is always this perception that athletes sign a multi-million dollar contract and the are set for life. The numbers prove otherwise.

I really wish more student-athletes stayed longer and valued the degree. I understand it is tough to pass up all that money. I do. I guess that is where you need good people around you to keep you grounded.

They don't think of it as a lot of money for a short period of time. They ratchet up their spending commensurate with their short term inflated income, then have trouble dialing back.

yes, the public perception is that if they sign a multi-million dollar contract then they are set for life. The reality is that they have a shot at being set really nice for a long time if they spend and invest it wisely.

I read somewhere that roughly 75% of all major lottery winners ($3 mil and up I believe) filed for bankruptcy within 5 years. Same principle applies.

Each player's individual background applies. If you're from a broke family then I say tough it out and get your degree just in case you lose everything. You'll have something to fall back on. If you are from a family that is financially stable like Nik then take the money because if you lose everything then most likely you'll have a saftey net until you figure things out.

It sucks that it's like that but that's life.
